A four-year-old girl died this evening from a gunshot wound to the chest.
It is unclear whether the shooting, which occurred at 106 Beech Court in the Weldon projects, was from the girl finding and mishandling the weapon, whether the gun was discharged by an adult or whether it was an intentional shooting.
Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said one of two men led from the apartment in handcuffs was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Captain Jay Burch of the sheriff’s office confirmed the two men escorted from the house for questioning were family members.
Earlier during the investigation Lieutenant Bobby Martin took a .308 bolt action rifle from the apartment for evidence.
People sitting outside the apartment next to 106 said they didn’t hear anything or know what happened.
Crying could be heard from inside the apartment and at one point there was anguished sobbing coming from inside.
Names were not immediately released.
