Captain Scott Hall said the sheriff’s office responded to a West Tenth Street convenience store just outside Roanoke Rapids around 8 p.m.
Deputies checked on the victims and secured the scene.
The Criminal Investigations Division learned a man entered the store holding a firearm and demanded money from the cashier and a patron.
The man who was later identified as Deloatch was dressed in dark clothing with a dark colored face mask. He took money and fled the area heading towards the Roanoke Rapids area.
Canine handler Corporal R. Elder and his dog Ivey began tracking in the direction that Deloatch was seen leaving.
Investigators learned another business had video footage of the man walking in the area without the face mask on. Based on that information Detective C. Watkins obtained warrants on Deloatch.
Lieutenant A. Cash and D Squad along with the assistance of officers with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department Officers took Deloatch into custody when he attempted to flee out of the back door of a Roanoke Rapids residence.
He has a May 14 district court date.
Crash with infant in vehicle
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant reported that on Friday around 5:30 a.m. Officer B. Holcomb responded to a single-vehicle crash on Old Farm Road near Downsbrook Drive.
Holcomb and emergency medical services personnel located the driver, James Wayne Johnston, 32, of Roanoke Rapids, rolling around on the ground.
An infant, who was identified as Johnston’s child, was unsecured in the wrecked car.
Johnston and the infant were transported to ECU North for injuries sustained from the wreck. The child is OK, Guyant confirmed this morning.
Holcomb and Lieutenant M. Hunsucker began an investigation and determined Johnston had traveled off the roadway over 100 feet and collided head-on with a tree.
Officers also learned there was a related report from a witness traveling behind Johnston who said he was driving erratically across the roadway at a very high rate of speed prior to the collision.
Holcomb continued his investigation at ECU North and interviewed Johnston there.
With the information learned from the witness and subsequent body language and mannerisms Holcomb determined Johnston was impaired.
A search warrant was obtained for Johnston to assist in determining if he was impaired by something other than alcohol.
Johnston was cited for:
Expired registration plate
Driving while license revoked from being indefinitely suspended for failure to appear in 2023
Child restraint violation
Careless and reckless driving
More charges may possibly be filed depending upon state laboratory results from the blood draw.
He is scheduled to appear in district court on June 14, according to the state court calendar.
