On June 7, 2022, Scott Nelson Smith went to live with his Heavenly Father.

His 64 years on this earth were filled with numerous experiences, starting with his growing up the only son of Nelson and Thelma (Lee) Smith with four sisters in Defiance, Ohio. Following graduation from Tinora High School in 1976, he joined the U S Army and dedicated the next 10 years of his life to serving his country. He was stationed in Germany in the latter years of service and enjoyed seeing other nearby countries when on leave.

Scott moved around a lot when he returned home after military service, and had many jobs in his life, but the last 30 years were spent mostly in North Carolina in the mechanic trade. He loved working with his hands and had an unbelievable work ethic. He was always willing to step in and help someone in need. He enjoyed helping the American Legion and was a member of New Life Christian Church. His servant’s heart and joy in living will carry on through those who knew him best. He will be deeply missed.

Scott is survived by his wife, Kimberly Smith; his father, Nelson Smith and partner, Helen Herr, Brownsville, TX; his sons, Alex Sinka and wife, Brittany, and Andrew Sinka and wife, Julianna; his grandchildren, Annabelle, Benjamin, and Ember Sinka, his sisters, Kelly Smith, Staci Kaufman, and Jody (Kevin) Smith, all of Defiance, Ohio, and Lisa (Bob) Gruebel, Powell, Ohio; nieces and nephews Colleen (Tyler) Fockler, and Kacie (Tom) Postema, Defiance, and Ryan Gruebel, Coralville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Eddie Eckerd, Minister, officiating. Burial will be private at Eastern North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2022, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be planting a Memorial Tree in Scott’s name or a donation to the Duke Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Center, Durham, NC.
