The body of missing kayaker Angel Martinez was located Saturday evening in the Roanoke Rapids Lake near where he was last seen the night of May 14.
Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Martinez and a friend were kayaking near the Fifth Street boat landing when the single kayak began to take on water and the two were separated. A resident in the area heard screaming and called 911.
Responders from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department and Halifax EMS arrived and rescued one of the kayakers but Martinez could not be found. Responders were unsure of how long the two were in the water due to the hypothermic nature of the friend that was rescued.
On May 15 the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office contacted multiple resources throughout the state to assist in the search and recovery of Martinez. “The sheriff’s office would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the agencies and volunteers that have assisted in the search and provided food and water to the responders and the family of Martinez through the many days of this operation,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said.
