The Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. Centre Friday was the site of Halifax Community College’s 57th annual commencement exercises as 280 graduates were awarded degrees and credentials.
“Such an achievement is a true testament to their dedication and commitment to their studies,” the college said. “We extend our warmest congratulations to these graduates and trust that the knowledge and skills they have acquired will prove invaluable in their future endeavors.”
Jason B. Harrell, president of ECU North Hospital, delivered the keynote address and shared his own journey of challenges and triumphs, emphasizing the transformative power of perseverance.
He drew parallels between personal experiences and the graduates' upcoming endeavors, highlighting the significance of the present moment as they transition to the next phase of their lives. Each field of study was addressed and Harrell acknowledged the unique contributions graduates will make in their respective professions.

He called on the graduates to embody the change they wish to see in the world, carrying with them not only knowledge, but also a passion for continuous learning and improvement.
During commencement, the HCC community paid tribute to two faculty members — Annabelle Anderton and Susan Fournier — who passed away. They were recognized for their profound contributions, dedication, expertise, and passion for education.
Bailey Layne Grissom was awarded the 2024 North Carolina Community College Academic Excellence Award. “Grissom's 4.0 GPA underscores his intellectual acumen, diligence, and perseverance throughout his academic journey,” the college said. “Notably, Grissom's attainment of not just one but three degrees — associate in arts, associate in science, and associate in general education — further emphasizes his versatility and breadth of knowledge.”
HCC President Patrena Benton Elliott delivered the charge to the graduates telling them, “Remember that success is not measured solely by achievements but is defined by the impact that we make on the world around us; especially within our own community. I encourage you to strive to leave a lasting impression wherever you are and at whatever you are doing.”
Brianna O’Neal, a graduate of Halifax County Early College and the president of the HCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society, accepted the charge on behalf of the class of 2024. “Ms. O’Neal has achieved significant academic success, earning an associate in arts degree through her hard work and dedication,” the college said. “The theme of the ceremony was centered around positive change and Ms. O’Neal emphasized the importance of embracing the future and bringing about constructive change.She encouraged her fellow graduates to take their knowledge and experiences into the world with bravery and hope, prepared to make a difference in their respective fields.”
