Halifax Community College celebrated service and dedication at its annual Distinguished Service Awards Luncheon held on May 6. 

The event recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to the college community.

“The Distinguished Service Awards Luncheon highlighted the achievements of faculty, staff, and retirees across various categories, acknowledging their exceptional commitment to excellence and leadership,” the college said. “The work that they perform daily is essential in preparing our citizens for educational attainment and workforce training.”

Among the recipients were:

Excellence in Teaching: Full-Time —  Maria Navarro, recognized for exemplifying the highest standards of instruction and consistently demonstrating excellence in teaching.

Excellence in Teaching: Part-Time — Nina Swink, acknowledged for her outstanding contributions to instruction and dedication to student success.

Excellence in Academic Advising: Lonnie Barker, celebrated for his commitment to providing exceptional guidance and support to students at HCC.

Staff Award: Valerie West, honored for her consistent and excellent performance, leadership, and significant contributions to the advancement of HCC and its students.

Innovator Award: Nichole Pitchford, recognized for implementing innovative ideas that align with the mission of the college, driving positive change and progress.

Spirit Award: Antonio Squire, commended for exemplifying cooperation, enthusiasm, and serving as a positive reflection of the college’s mission.

Presidential Leadership Award: Dr. Julie Galvin, honored for demonstrating outstanding leadership in support of Halifax Community College’s mission.

Additionally, the Luncheon bid farewell and expressed gratitude to retirees Scott Dameron, Victor Marrow, Greg Parker, Donna Sellers, Ethel Edwards, and Dr. John Eze for their years of dedicated service and commitment to HCC.

Honorees for milestone Years of Service were:

5 Years of Service — Kelly Barber and Anthony Simmons.

10 Years of Service — Angela Taylor

35 Years of Service — Mr. Jason Bone

The event was made possible through the support of sponsors, Enviva, Oakley Collier Architects, and Roanoke Cooperative.

“Halifax Community College extends its heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients and retirees for their outstanding contributions and commitment to excellence,” the college said.
