The Roanoke Valley came together recently to celebrate individual and organizational achievements and contributions at Halifax Community College’s Progressive Community Awards ceremony.

The recipients are:

Youth Leader Award: Makayla Johnson

Johnson was celebrated for her leadership and commitment to community engagement. 

“As the director of diversity and inclusion and youth leaders mentor for ABC2, Ms. Johnson demonstrates exceptional dedication to addressing health disparities, promoting inclusivity, and fostering positive change,” the college said. “Her innovative initiatives, including cultural festivals, community wellness days, and advocacy efforts, have significantly enriched the Roanoke Valley community.”

Business Impact Award: Alexis Hockaday of The Lex Experience

Hockaday was recognized for her entrepreneurial spirit and significant contributions to the local business landscape. “As the owner of The Lex Experience and The Soft Life Studio, Ms. Hockaday exemplifies excellence in service delivery and community engagement,” the college said. “Her dedication to enhancing beauty and wellness, coupled with her philanthropic endeavors, exemplifies her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.”

Community Bridge Builder Award: Tracy Story

Story was honored for his efforts in bridging gaps and fostering unity within the community.

“Through his organization, The Rewritten Foundation, he has consistently demonstrated compassion and generosity by providing essential support to those in need,” the college said. “From furnishing homes to advocating for children's welfare, Mr. Story's selfless contributions have left an indelible mark on the Roanoke Valley community.”

The awards were presented by HCC President Patrena Benton Elliott, alongside the valedictorians of HCC's early colleges: Bailey Grissom from Roanoke Rapids Early College, Taniyah Alston from Halifax County Early College, Nathan Lee Aston from Northampton County Early College, and Myasia Person from Roanoke Valley Early College.

Other highlights

The evening commenced with a welcome from Elliott.

Linda Brewer, an HCC trustee, extended greetings and acknowledged the presence of special guests, while Tia Alfonso, HCC nursing instructor, introduced the keynote speaker — Ginny Lewis, CEO/president of Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The event featured a Sponsor Spotlight segment, honoring Dominion Energy for its support of the college. Winnie Wade, External Affairs at Dominion Energy, gave remarks.

Elliott concluded the evening with closing remarks and expressed gratitude to all attendees for “their unwavering commitment to building a stronger community.” 

The Progressive Community Awards ceremony is an event that acknowledges and celebrates individuals and businesses in the Roanoke Valley who have been nominated by the public. 

A committee rigorously screens all submitted nomination forms to select the honorees. “HCC would like to extend its congratulations to all the honorees and express its commitment to continuing its partnership with the community to drive progress and prosperity.”
