Officers work to put the sign in place. Officers work to put the sign in place.

As the Northampton County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate its missing person cases, this week signs were erected with the photos of the ones authorities are looking for.

On Tuesday the sheriff's office, with help from their counterparts in Halifax County, erected one of the signs in Gaston at the crossroads of Highway 46 and 48.

Signs have gone up at Highway 46 and 301 in Garysburg and at Highway 258 just south of Murfreesboro, Sheriff Jack Smith said.

The signs are like the ones put up recently in Halifax County — all of them part of a pledge by the sheriffs in both counties made during a spring prayer vigil to keep the cases fresh in the minds of motorists passing by them.

“I'm hoping someone who knows something sees the pictures,” Smith said. “I'm hoping someone who knows something will call. I'm hoping they will alert people if they see something that maybe they can reflect and will hopefully call us, the SBI or any law enforcement agency so we can get out and investigate it.”

Smith said he is hopeful the public will help law enforcement in these cases — James Futrell; Phyllis Powell; Daniel Moses; Robert Moore and Shawn Alston. “There are more public eyes than law enforcement eyes. We hope it keeps them in everybody's minds.”

Chief Deputy Daryl Harmon said, “We hope this makes the public aware so we can continue to get new leads.”

Sheila Moses, whose brother, Daniel, is among the missing on the signs, has pointed feelings about them. “I appreciate the signs, but they are four-and-a-half years too late. The question remains the same — why is no one looking for Daniel Moses and the others and shame on the authorities in Northampton County. My question is where is Daniel Moses?”

Smith said today it is a question he wants answered as well. “We're constantly trying to look at it and see what we can do. We're working with the SBI. We've turned over information to the FBI, which has been involved for several months.”

The sheriff's office is currently waiting on results from an FBI investigation into the matter. “Hopefully we're going to have a meeting after their review and what's been said to them. We're following all leads in all the cases. We want to find these people equally as bad. We are very sympathetic to all of the families.”

Smith said he was appreciative of the help from Major Scott Hall and Major Neil Aycock of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office. “They had the equipment to dig the holes and were very helpful. The equipment used was personal so neither cost the taxpayers any money.”

As families wait for news, Smith said, “We're moving forward. We continue to work as information is gathered. Regardless of where the information comes from, we beg them to pass it on to us.”
