A Gaston man is wanted for shooting and killing a dog as well as for warrants related to him being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said Lieutenant M. Hunsucker responded to the Meadowbrook Trailer Park area shortly after 7:45 Thursday night after receiving a report of a man later identified as Jonathan Leamark Johnson shooting a rifle at an animal.

Officers located a deceased dog at the scene and learned there was an earlier dispute over the animal.

The dispute, Guyant said, led Johnson, 29, to return to the scene and the animal was shot and killed.

Johnson was developed as the alleged suspect, the police chief said. He is a convicted felon following a 2022 guilty plea for felony larceny in Halifax County.

Hunsucker collected evidence and filed the following warrants:

Two counts of possession of a firearm by convicted felon

Three counts of assault by pointing a gun

Felony animal cruelty

Going armed to the terror of the people

Discharge a firearm inside the city limits
