Halifax Regional Medical Center recently enhanced and opened its Cardiac Catheterization Lab to diagnose and treat cardiovascular illnesses.

With approval from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the medical center will now perform percutaneous coronary intervention, known as angioplasty or cardiac stenting. Leading the cardiac catheterization program is Dr. Haile A. Jones, who is board-certified in nuclear cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, and internal medicine. Jones joined Halifax Regional Cardiology in June.

Suited with the latest imaging technology, the 2,800-square feet catheterization lab brings comprehensive cardiac prevention, diagnostic and treatment services to the Roanoke Valley.

Patients no longer have to travel to Rocky Mount or Raleigh for life-saving, modern catheterization procedures the lab provides.

Led by Jones, the lab team, certified in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, includes:

Amy Williams, cardiopulmonary manager, with 16 years of experience

Tonya Hasty, RN, with 12 years of total experience in the emergency room and in cardiology

Tesha King, registered radiologic technologist with 25 years of experience

Jeremy Proctor, registered radiologic technologist and registered nuclear medicine tech with four years of experience

The newly added PCI, also referred to as angioplasty or cardiac stenting, is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries by inserting a long hollow thin tube with a small balloon or stent attached to the tip used to restore blood flow to the heart muscle without open-heart surgery.

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions and examine how well the heart is working.

During the procedure, a catheter is inserted in an artery or vein in the groin, neck or arm and threaded through the blood vessels leading to the heart.

This allows the physician to run diagnostic tests using the catheter.

Patients are usually awake during the entire procedure, but provided medications to help them relax. Cardiac catheterization is usually safe and risks are uncommon.

Appointments with Jones may be scheduled by contacting Halifax Regional Cardiology at 252-537-9268.
