Weldon City Schools, along with approximately 100 youth-serving organizations, will participate in the nationwide celebration of Cal Ripken Sr. Day Tuesday at Weldon High School.

The event is hosted by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation in honor of the former MLB manager and dedicated community volunteers.

Founded in 2001 by members of the Ripken family in memory of their patriarch, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation works to create programs that positively impact at-risk youth through active community partnerships with America's most successful youth service organizations.

Approximately 100 youth will participate in a baseball and softball game for children with special needs, providing an opportunity for youth of all abilities to enjoy the games.

The event will be held at Weldon High School at 9 a.m.

Cal Sr. signed his first professional contract in 1957 and spent the next 37 years as player, coach and manager within the Baltimore Orioles organization, including the 1988 season, when he was skipper of and managed his sons Cal Jr. and Bill.
