The city said in a statement today council was briefed in closed session Tuesday evening on the progress being made on Roanoke Rapids Theatre negotiations.

“It included efforts to market the theatre and the ongoing efforts to renegotiate the debt structure with Bank of America,” the city said.

Recently, Mayor Emery Doughtie, City Manager Joseph Scherer and City Attorney Gilbert Chichester traveled to Raleigh for a second meeting with senior members of the Local Government Commission. “The city has been assured that the LGC has taken a personal interest in the status of the Bank of America loan and will visit Roanoke Rapids in the near future. They have further agreed to be present and directly participate in the negotiations to restructure the debt.”

Scherer further reported needed repairs at the venue have been completed and efforts are under way to rent and market the building to prospective buyers.
