Wayne Alexander Powell, Sr., 73, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Monday, October 19, 2020 at Rex UNC Healthcare.

Wayne was born January 23, 1947 in Halifax County to the late Robert Alexander Powell and Victoria Morgan Powell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Angela Walker; his grandsons, Chase Powell and Sidney Rook.

Wayne served four years in the U. S. Air Force during Vietnam. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and choir director. Wayne was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He started working with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph and retired from Centurylink.

Wayne is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Brenda Powell; his children, Wayne Powell, Jr. and his wife Kelly and Kim Rook and her husband Ted; his grandchildren, Colton Powell, Sarah Rook, Caleb Powell and Elana Rook; two brother-in-laws and several nephews nieces.

A memorial service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 23, 2020 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. John Rowland and Dr. Francis Kyle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.
