Roy Lee Jones, 72, a resident of Roanoke Rapids and Boone, beloved spouse and companion of Marybeth (Odell) Jones passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2020 with Marybeth at his side.

He was born on February 28, 1948 in Weldon to Barney Lee Jones and Reva Mae (Barnett) Jones.  

Roy was raised in Weldon and was a graduate of Weldon High School, Class of 1966. 

In High School, he was an outstanding student and athlete playing baseball, basketball and was quarterback for the Tornado’s football team. 

He graduated with a Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and was a lifelong devoted fan of the Tar Heels. 

His employment opportunities took him in many directions but he was always most proud of the time he spent as a math teacher and football coach in Durham, NC.  Prior to his retirement, Roy had a distinguished and very successful career with Cigna Financial Advisors (Connecticut General).  He was an avid golfer until he was sidelined with a back disability and enjoyed reading, history, fishing and Contract Bridge earning ACBL Life Master status. 

In addition to Marybeth, he is survived by his mother, Reva Mae (Barnett) Jones; his two brothers, Ashley Jones (Ann) and Kenneth Jones (Rosemary); his three sisters, Patricia Holloman (Vic), Diane Burnsworth and Gail Porter (Steve); his three stepdaughters, his twelve grandchildren and one great grandson who lovingly call him “Bumpa”; his two daughters and four grandchildren; his two Aunts, Carol Williams and Martha Hartsoe; his nieces, nephews and cousins and their families, his Odell family and his many friends from along the way. 

Roy was predeceased by his father, Barney Lee Jones.

The family wishes to thank SECU Hospice House of Johnston Health in Smithfield, NC for their loving and compassionate care during Roy’s final days.  

Memorial donations, in Roy’s name, may be made payable to JHF - Hospice Fund and mailed to Johnston Health Foundation, P.O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.

Celebrations of Roy’s life will be held at later dates.
