A Roanoke Rapids man remains in the Halifax County Detention Center after he was charged with attempted first-degree murder and other counts for firing at an apartment complex employee Tuesday afternoon.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said 72-year-old Linwood Miles fired into the office area of the apartment complex off Becker Drive. The shot barely missed the maintenance employee with whom Miles had a disagreement, he said.

The call came in around 3 p.m. about an armed person at the complex.

While PACE Officer J. Conrad, Sergeant S. Langley and Master Officer K. Williams were responding, calls came in that a shot had been fired at the employee.

Guyant said the officers learned that this was related to a reputed disagreement Miles had with the employee and escalated to the point where Miles allegedly stated “he hated the employee and wanted him to die.”

Miles returned to his apartment after the shooting.

The officers ordered him out of the room. After a brief struggle, in which Guyant confirmed Miles sustained an injury, the man was taken into custody.

Conrad located a handgun in the man’s front pocket and Guyant said he appeared to be highly intoxicated.

A magistrate charged Miles with attempted first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a June 27 district court date.
