The Sons of the American Revolution Halifax Resolves Chapter Tuesday presented awards to a Roanoke Rapids police officer and two city firefighters.

Chapter President Ken Wilson presented the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal to Captain Michael E. Moseley.

The medal is presented to those who have served with distinction and devotion in the field of law enforcement, Wilson said.

Moseley has served the citizens of Roanoke Rapids for the last 20 years.

Following a tour of duty in the United States Army and with what was then the North Carolina Department of Corrections after his discharge, he was hired by the Roanoke Rapids Police Department in 2002.  “His advancement through the ranks in the department is an illustration of his dedication of service to the public,” Wilson said.

In 2007 he was promoted to police officer II and achieved master officer rank in 2012. He received sergeant stripes in 2019 and became an administrative lieutenant in 2021 followed by a promotion to captain in December.

“Captain Moseley has selflessly given his time to serve not only our country, but the citizens of the Roanoke Valley,” Wilson said. “He strives to teach young officers how to be the best they can be, and to receive as much training as possible.”

Wilson described Moseley as a compassionate and caring officer who “gives 100 percent to the job of police officer. He has shown that he has integrity, courage and honor when conducting business with the citizens and these traits carry over in how he conducts himself in his private life.”

Life Saving Medal

Wilson presented the SAR Life Saving Medal to Lieutenant Josh Sparks and firefighter James Bolton.

On August 21 of last year the two were on duty when they were dispatched to East Littleton Road at roughly 9 p.m. in reference to a woman who was not breathing.

They found the woman unresponsive and without a pulse. “Firefighters immediately began to apply life saving measures by applying the AED and administering CPR,” Wilson said. “Once EMS arrived and were able to start administering medications by IV, it was found that the patient had regained a pulse.”

With the patient regaining a pulse, fire and EMS personnel placed the patient on a stretcher and transported her to Vidant North Hospital.  The patient, when arriving at Vidant North, still had a pulse and care was transferred to emergency room staff.

Wilson and Elizabeth Montfort-Ashe Chapter Regent Carol Guidry shared the master of ceremonies duties.

The SAR was represented by the Halifax Resolves and Alamance Battleground Chapters and the DAR was represented by the Elizabeth Montfort Ashe, Joseph McDowell, Micajah Petaway — Halifax Resolves and Warren Chapters.

SAR greetings were brought on by NCSSAR State Treasurer Samuel C. Powell.

NC DAR State Vice-Regent Crickett Crigler brought greetings on behalf of the DAR.

A presentation on the life and times of General George Washington was given by Powell.

This was the first time such an event has been held in the local area and there are hopes it will become an annual event.
