The following are highlights from Tuesday’s city council meeting:

Council approved a conditional use permit application from Ciro and Ofelia Tapia to use property at 939 Jackson Street as a church.

The building was formerly occupied by a computer and internet business.

According to documents contained in the agenda packet, the Tapias came to Henderson in 1999 and established Iglesia Centro Pentecostes Monte De Sion as a center for the Spanish-speaking population in the Henderson area.

Recently they determined Roanoke Rapids has a Spanish-speaking population in need of the service they provide in Henderson “and believe that they can offer a faith-based foundation for this community.”

Mr. Tapia, speaking through an interpreter, said, “To me, it’s very important to bring Jesus Christ to the community.”

The Tapias expect to begin their services with a congregation of between 10 to 15 people and propose to hold services on Sundays at 3 p.m. and Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

They set the Sunday hours to avoid a conflict with the morning services at the Baptist church across the street.

Demolition

Council approved an order to demolish and remove a dwelling at 117 Madison Street.

At its September meeting, council decided to delay action to give the owner an opportunity to rehabilitate the dwelling.

City code enforcement officers Roger Bell and Donald Tart, however, determined the owner “has a building permit but has only done some work to the rear of the home tearing out siding and walls … We have determined the dwelling to be in a dilapidated condition as defined by the Minimum Housing Code.”

Hayden Cash

Council recognized Hayden Cash, the 9-year-old son of Andy and Tanya Cash.

Hayden stood at attention and saluted as the funeral procession for Roanoke Rapids Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Hawkins made its way down Old Farm Road last month.

Mayor Emery Doughtie presented the boy a letter praising the respect he showed for the fire department and Hawkins.
