A Virginia man was charged Monday afternoon on methamphetamine trafficking counts following a traffic stop in the Highway 158-Zoo Road area of Roanoke Rapids.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement the stop occurred around 3 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle — Tonya Renee Carroll, 39, of Roanoke Rapids — was cited for driving while license revoked. A January 27 court date was set. Hall said Carroll is an acquaintance of the man arrested.

A canine sniff of the vehicle by Duri, a canine handled by Agent D.K. Newsome, alerted agents to the presence of narcotics. The passenger, Donald Carter, 52, of Colonial Heights, reportedly had 5 grams of meth in his hand and there was another three bags of meth — approximately 85 grams — located under the seat.

Further investigation, Hall said in the statement, led agents to a residence in the Airport Road community off Highway 158 where an additional 266 grams of meth were seized. The investigation connected Carter to that residence, Hall said.

Carter was arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine by transport, trafficking in methamphetamine by possession, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule I controlled substance and felony possession of schedule I controlled substance.

He received a $50,000 bond and December 18 court date.

The street value of the meth seized during this investigation is approximately $28,560. Agents D.J. Epperson, C.A. Parker, R.E. Ball and Newsome participated.

Hall said agents have been working closely with the United States Department of Homeland Security and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina on federal cases in Halifax County. Both agencies have been apprised of the facts in the case.

“This illegal narcotic is becoming more prevalent in our community and we are encouraging family members of substance abusers to please familiarize yourself with this very dangerous narcotic,” Hall said.

Citizens are encouraged to call local law enforcement should they encounter any substance that may be suspicious or Halifax County Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444 to report any drug activity or log on to www.halifaxsheriff.com and submit a tip.
