Autopsy results show the official cause of death in the case of Edward Lee Bare was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detective Rich Somogyi of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said based on investigation it appears that Bare, 48, killed himself sometime shortly after telling and kissing his wife goodbye last Monday morning.
A search party found Bare’s body about 150 yards behind his house on Easton Street in a swampy, wooded area around 2 p.m. Saturday.
Somogyi declined to say where on his body Bare shot himself.
The autopsy was conducted today in Greenville.
Somogyi said Bare’s wife, Rose, wanted to relay a message of appreciation for all the work of the volunteers and local businesses that provided food for search party members. He said she also appreciated all the help and support from people in the community.
Bare’s sister, Melissa Taylor, could not immediately be reached for comment this evening.
