A breaking and entering suspect in Scotland Neck was arrested Tuesday after the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a crime in progress.
Detective R. Somogyi said the report came from the Highway 903 area but when deputies checked the area the suspect could not be located.
Further investigation by Somogyi determined the suspect was related to the victim, whose storage building was broken into in an attempt to take music equipment.
Somogyi said the suspect, later identified as Demetrius Devante Shields, pushed the victim when confronted. Shields, 19, of Scotland Neck, fled but was arrested later by Deputy Matt Brown on warrants obtained by Somogyi.
Shields was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods. He was jailed on $2,500 bond and has a January 9 court date.
