Two local women have been arrested and a Roanoke Rapids man described as the alleged shooter in a November Sussex County, Virginia, murder remains at large.
Kelvin Kennedy Parker II, 23, is on the lam, while Herbert Warren, 20, is in custody after he was discovered holed up in his mother’s house at 120 Creek Drive in the Southgate community last month. Both men are from Roanoke Rapids.
Sussex County authorities also issued an arrest warrant for Parker for murder and robbery, according to Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Detective R. Somogyi.
Further investigation of the case led to arrests Tuesday of Malana Anderton, 20, of Halifax, and Michelle Jones, 18, of Roanoke Rapids.
They were both charged with aiding and abetting murder and aiding and abetting robbery.
Lieutenant Neil Aycock and Somogyi arrested the two on the Sussex County warrants and they were jailed in Halifax County without the opportunity for bond.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to look for Parker, who is known to frequent areas in the city limits of Roanoke Rapids.
The murder occurred on November 10 around 9 p.m. at a residence in Jarratt.
Captain Kevin Diggs, supervisor of investigations for the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, said Warren and Parker entered the house at 307 First Street.
Diggs said Warren was acquainted with the victim in the case, Christopher Rawls, 32.
Warren and Parker went to the house for a possible narcotics transaction that turned into a robbery. “The robbery went bad with a shooting,” Diggs said.
Parker is believed to be the shooter in the case. Rawls was shot once with what is believed to be a 9mm handgun.
There were three males and four children in the house, who were forced to lie on the floor, Diggs said. Their pockets were searched and cash and wallets stolen.
The house was ransacked but it was not clear if anything else was taken, according to Diggs.
At some point Rawls tried to get up from a down position and get the gun away from Parker.
After the murder and after ransacking the house, Parker and Warren fled to North Carolina.
Diggs is appreciative of the help from Roanoke Rapids and Halifax County. “We couldn’t have done this without their assistance.”
