Roanoke Rapids firefighters this evening contained a kitchen fire in the 1300 block of Chase Avenue.
Fire damage was contained to the kitchen but there was water and heat damage throughout the house, Deputy Chief Mike Clements said.
Firefighters received the call shortly after 7:45 and observed heavy smoke coming from the house at 1315 Chase Avenue.
Seven firefighters arriving on two trucks did an interior attack and discovered the fire originated in the kitchen.
They contained the fire in about 10 minutes.
At least two people were at the house when the fire occurred. No one was injured but a woman who was six-months pregnant was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center for precautionary measures.
Content damage was contained to the kitchen. Clothing should be salvageable despite the smoke damage.
The Red Cross was notified to put the occupants, who were renting the house, up, Clements said.
It appears the fire started when something was left on the stove on low heat, Clements said.
