A mulch fire at the Halifax County Landfill off Liles Road has been contained but not extinguished, Deputy County Manager Christina Wells confirmed this afternoon. It may take two to three days to completely extinguish the fire.

Wells said there was no equipment damaged. About a half to three quarters of an acre burned.

County Manager Dia Denton had reported during this morning’s board of commissioners meeting that Public Utilities Director Chris Willams was headed to the fire and that the North Carolina Forest Service was at the scene. “They’re moving some large equipment to try to contain it.”

Wells said multiple fire departments responded to help shuttle water and that the North Carolina Department of Transportation dispatched an excavator until MJ Price could arrive.

Firefighters from Rheasville, Darlington, Davie, and Enfield responded to assist, Wells said.
