Charges continue to mount in a December breaking and entering in which damages and items stolen have been valued at more than $20,000.
Arrests in the case began in April when Detective Roy Rooks of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office charged and arrested Bernice Whitaker, 33, and her 19-year-old son, Rakino, who are both from Roanoke Rapids.
Last week Rooks charged Sedrick Putney, 30, in the crime, in which a house in the Roanoke Rapids was ransacked and items including bedsprings, copying machines and heating units were taken. Some of the items were fenced and some sold for scrap, Rooks said.
Rooks said on May 5, Deputy C. Boden arrested Putney, of Roanoke Rapids, as result of an investigation into the multiple break-ins of the residence.
Putney was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, felony conspiracy and injury to personal property.
The sheriff’s office received the report on December 20 and since then Rooks said he has learned numerous individuals are involved.
The Whitakers face the same charges as Putney, who was jailed on $14,000 bond and has a May 30 court date.
More arrests are pending.
