The state Highway Patrol will be meeting with the district attorney’s office to determine whether charges will be filed in a crash Wednesday afternoon that claimed the life of a mother and her child.

Trooper T.C. Wood said the crash occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Highway 186 just outside Seaboard.

Kenny Lee Graham, 19, was driving a 1988 Lincoln and had the father of the child who died as a passenger with him.

Tammi Mason, 37, was driving a 1999 Mercedes and following the Lincoln. She was driving with her son, Tavion, 13, who was in the front seat with her, and her other son and nephew who were in the back, Wood said.

Graham was attempting to make a left turn into a private drive as Tammi Mason was passing him.

The vehicles collided in the westbound lane and Tammi Mason lost control of the vehicle, striking a tree on the driver’s side door.

Wood said Tammi Mason, of Garysburg, died at the scene and her son was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. Both mother and child were wearing seatbelts.

One of the passengers in the vehicle Tammi Mason was driving was airlifted to Viadent Hospital in Greenville and the other was treated and released from Halifax Regional. The condition of the child sent to Viadent was not immediately known, Wood said.

Graham and Kelly Mason, the father of Tavion and the husband of Tammi, were not injured.

It was not clear whether Graham used a turn signal.
