A newborn baby was found dead on a kitchen floor at a house on 1003 Franklin Street Wednesday night, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said police and EMS responded to a medical emergency call around 10 p.m.

Officers determined a juvenile had given birth to a baby, which was found unresponsive on the floor.

The baby was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Medical Center. “Investigators are looking into the circumstances of this horrific situation,” Bondarek said.

He declined to elaborate.
