Weldon police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continue to seek leads in an April 27 murder which occurred in the early morning hours in the 100 block of East Seventh Street.

Chief Chris Davis would only say investigators are “looking for closure for the family” of the victim — Derrick Lamont Shearin.

In a statement Davis said, “The Weldon Police Department along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are still diligently working on the homicide case …”

Said Davis in the statement: “The Weldon Police Department and SBI have followed up on all calls that have been received over the last month and are continuing to do so at this time.”

While Davis said his agency and the SBI appreciate the calls from those who have provided information, he added in the statement, however, “The calls are starting to slow down and information is needed that can be corroborated. Due to the location and time of the incident involving Mr. Shearin, we feel that there may be witnesses that have not yet been identified and would encourage them to come forward in the interest of bringing closure to the family of Mr. Shearin.

“The Weldon Police Department as well as the SBI want to provide justice for Derrick Shearin and the Shearin family as well as the Weldon community.”

The police department said in April it has not established motive in the case and investigators are unsure of the circumstances which led up to events of the shooting.

Police received the call shortly before 12:15 a.m.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
