Weldon police this morning identified the victim of a fatal shooting Saturday morning as 38-year-old Derrick Lamont Shearin.

Chief Chris Davis said police, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, continue to investigate and have not yet established a motive in the case.

As of yet there has been no suspect description. “We’re still gathering intel throughout the community,” Davis said. “Anyone willing to talk may call the police department or Crimestoppers.”

Police received a call shortly before 12:15 Saturday morning a person was shot.

The murder occurred in the 100 block of East Seventh Street.

Davis said Saturday officers located shell casings from an undetermined type of weapon outside and located the victim inside.

Sergeant T.L. Mason, who is leading the investigation, said Saturday, “We’re unsure of the circumstances that led up to the events of the shooting at this time until further investigation is completed.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
