Weldon police are conducting a murder investigation after receiving a call shortly before 12:15 this morning a person was shot.

The murder occurred in the 100 block of East Seventh Street, according to Chief Chris Davis. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the probe.

Davis said officers located shell casings from an undetermined type of weapon outside and located the victim inside.

Davis declined immediately to release the victim’s name due to the continued investigation but did confirm the victim was a 38-year-old man.

“At this time we’re unsure of the motive,” the chief said.

Said Sergeant T.L. Mason, who is leading the investigation: “We’re unsure of the circumstances that led up to the events of the shooting at this time until further investigation is completed.”

Davis said there is currently no suspect description.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
