A winter weather advisory for central North Carolina is in effect from 6 tonight through 10 Thursday morning, the National Weather Service reported.

Periods of rain will continue today with temperatures above freezing. Rain accumulations are expected to be fractional — from a quarter to a half an inch of rain west of Highway 1 and a half-inch to an inch to the east.

This evening, rain will shift to a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow across the north, moving southward overnight into Thursday morning.

Precipitation is expected to exit the region by Thursday morning.

Snow accumulation is expected to be north of I-85 and near the Virginia border, with little to no accumulation south of the Highway 64 corridor.

The forecasted snow amount is predicted to be less than half an inch and impacts from freezing rain are expected to be around a tenth of an inch. The highest accrual of ice is expected south and east of Raleigh.

Localized icy spots on the roads and thus hazardous travel is possible Thursday morning, especially where snow/freezing rain does accumulate. Temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s overnight, which could lead to black ice.

The combination of rain and melting snow already on the ground could cause water ponding in areas with poor drainage.
