Mills enters county commissioner race

A second challenger has entered the Halifax County Board of Commissioners race, according to the latest list from the board of elections.

Halifax County School Board members and commissioners were the first Monday afternoon to begin discussions designed to update school capital plans.

Supporters of a supplemental school tax for the Halifax County School system say those leading an effort to fight the measure, which will be on the November 8 ballot, have misrepresented how much would be requested should the referendum pass.

Hawkins, Balmer file for respective BOE seats

Incumbent Halifax County School Board member Carolyn Hawkins and incumbent Weldon City Schools Board member Barbara Balmer are the latest to file for the March 15 primary.

Five Halifax County School Board members today reinstated Elease Frederick as superintendent, three days after she was fired on a 2-1 vote.

A 2-1 vote Monday led to the ouster of Halifax County Schools Superintendent Elease Frederick, the board of education member who made the motion to release her said this afternoon.

Harvey: State intervention of county schools futile

The president of the local chapter of the NAACP says state intervention in the Halifax County School System is futile.

The chairman of the North Carolina State Board of Education today sent a strongly worded letter to the Halifax County Board of Education saying it will immediately take a more direct role in the district's budget, employment decisions and student course assignment decisions.
