A Conway man was charged Monday with two counts of trafficking opium or heroin following a traffic stop.

Lieutenant A.J. Thomas of the Northampton County Sheriff's Office said in all about 9 grams of Hydrocodone and and Acetaminophen was found in the floorboard of the vehicle driven Sanja Palmer of Kannapolis after she was stopped for running a red light in the Highway 35 and Highway 158 area of Conway.

Thomas noted in a statement that the vehicle was entering what he described as a known high crime and drug neighborhood of the town.

Palmer was cited for running a traffic light following further investigation of the vehicle, which also yielded a large quantity of opiates.

Michael J. Mager of Conway was arrested, charged and jailed on $200,000 bond. He had a first court appearance Tuesday and is scheduled to appear again Thursday.

“The Northampton County Sheriff's Office will continue to investigate any and all leads of illegal drug activities in our county,” Sheriff Jack Smith said in a statement. “I would like to thank our Narcotics Division for their effort in this case.”
