A 58-year-old Roanoke Rapids man was charged today for taking indecent liberties with a 13-year-old girl last month.

Detective B.C. Griffin of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Wilson Eugene Fleming was a volunteer with Halifax County School System at an undisclosed school, which is where he came in contact with the victim.

School system spokesman Keith Hoggard said Fleming had been a volunteer coach for around 20 years.

He was a volunteer coach for about 20 years and was dismissed on February 3 pending the results of the investigation. Hoggard said he would not speculate on Fleming's future.

Griffin said the offense did not occur on school property. He declined to say where the offense took place other than to say in the statement it occurred in the Roanoke Rapids area..

He did say the victim reported the offense, which involved inappropriate touching on February 2.

Investigation of the case included assistance from School Resource Officer Rodney Williams.

Fleming was jailed on $30,000 bond and has an April 15 court date.
