Detective B.C. Griffin of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said there was no evidence to suggest the animal was stolen to use for fighting.
Trevon Lynch of Hollister faces a charge of larceny of a dog, which was reported to the sheriff's office on January 12.
In addition to that charge, Lynch faces counts of breaking and entering; larceny of a firearm and possession of a stolen weapon. He received a $20,000 bond for all charges and a March 25 court date.
The breaking and entering counts stem from a January 15 crime in Hollister.
Corporal P. Moyer arrested Lynch while conducting a traffic stop in the Hollister area.
