An arrest of a man Monday by Roanoke Rapids police in which 1.04 pounds of marijuana was seized, aided the Halifax County Sheriff's Office in the seizure of more than three pounds later that evening.

The chain of events that led to Ronald Tiotta Burgess's arrest by Roanoke Roanoke Rapids police Narcotics Agent Jamie Hardy began shortly before 6 p.m., Chief Andy Jackson said.

An investigation by Hardy allegedly revealed that Burgess was at T.J. Davis parked near the Aquatic Center as midget football practice was under way.

Hardy's investigation reportedly uncovered 1.04 pounds of marijuana in the Nissan Maxima Burgess, 29, was in. A concealed handgun was also found, Jackson said.

That led Hardy to charge Burgess with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession and concealing a weapon.

He received a $5,000 bond for those charges and a December 3 court date.

Following up on the investigation, Captain Anzell Harris of the sheriff's office said Hardy contacted him for additional information. “We already information on him,” Harris said. “The information that Agent Hardy had is how we obtained our search warrant.”

The raid by the sheriff's office on Gardner Drive resulted in the seizure of three and a half pounds of marijuana as well as items of paraphernalia.

Burgess, who was apparently already out of jail on the city's charges, surrendered to the sheriff's office early Tuesday morning to face additional charges.
