The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District’s Board of Trustees named Terrell Rutledge Jones as the next principal of Belmont Elementary School at their meeting Tuesday.

“We had a number of highly qualified applicants for the principalship at Belmont Elementary School,” said Dennis Sawyer, superintendent of schools. “Mrs. Jones’ credentials, passion, and experience made her the right fit for Belmont.”

Jones comes to Belmont Elementary School with more than 25 years of experience in education, serving the last seven years as the principal of Central Elementary School in Elizabeth City.

She earned Bachelors of Arts degrees in Elementary Education and Sociology from the College of William and Mary and a Masters of Urban Education Administration from Norfolk State University.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be able to serve the students and staff at Belmont,” said Jones. “I am looking forward to meeting the 800-plus, bright, eager students. I want them to know in advance that I believe in them and expect only their very best. I can't wait to join hands with the staff, the parents, and the community of Roanoke Rapids to give our students the best education possible."

Jones will replace retired principal Loretta Riddick, who has served as interim principal for the last few months following the resignation of Kelvin Edwards earlier this year.

Jones will begin her new role on July 1.
