School board members take oath; elect officers

Jay Carlisle was nominated chairman and Valencia Davis vice chair of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Education this evening.

“I thank the board for letting me serve the last two years,” Carlisle said. “It's an honor and privilege to serve.”

Davis thanked the board for their vote of confidence.

Meanwhile tonight, Judge Turner Stephenson swore in returning board members Thomas McDonald and Carlisle and newly elected board member Cathy Keeter.

In other matters this evening the board:

Agreed to renew its membership in the city schools consortium, which is administered through Elkin City Schools. The membership fee is $3,474. Superintendent Dennis Sawyer said following the meeting the school system has been a long-time partner in the consortium, which lobbies for city school systems on a variety of issues including consolidation. “It helps us have a common thread,” he said.
