Roanoke Rapids Graded School District staff will go to the schools with explanations and to garner feedback in the wake of legislation that will end teacher tenure across the state.

School Superintendent Dennis Sawyer told school board members this evening that the system's liaison committee suggested that staff go to the schools and talk with teachers on the matter, “And encourage teachers to provide us feedback on ideas on the 25 percent of teachers to offer contracts.”

By 2018, all teachers will work under one-, two- or four-year contracts that replace tenure rights requiring school administrators to follow a defined process when firing a teacher.

In a matter related to teachers, Sawyer told the school board that teacher turnover rates released show Roanoke Rapids to have one of the lowest in the state, at 9.9 percent. The state turnover rate is 14.33 percent.

Dare County has the lowest rate, he said. “I applaud the board, staff, principals and central services.”
