Herman Lee “Smurf” Edwards put up no resistance today as he was caught in Rocky Mount pushing a baby stroller with a baby in it, accompanied by another man.

Chief Deputy Wes Tripp of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said Edwards was captured by the sheriff's office, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department and the Rocky Mount Police Department on Highway 301 between the Motel 6 and Executive Suites. The baby belonged to the man he was with and an unidentified woman, part of the case which is being investigated by Rocky Mount police.

In Halifax, Edwards was booked and charged with the murders of Brandon Tyrone Peterson in Weldon and Lorenzo Tann Jr. in Roanoke Rapids. He will also be charged with several outstanding warrants from the Weldon Police Department.

“I'm innocent,” Edwards said when asked for a comment as he was led for booking.

Tripp said he was pleased with the countless hours investigators with the sheriff's office, both narcotics and plain clothes, and the Roanoke Rapids Police Department spent on investigating the case.

As the sheriff's office began the booking process, Detective Jeff Baggett of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department was at the jail to begin the booking process for Edwards' girlfriend, who is also going to be charged.
