A four-year-old girl who died this evening was accidentally shot by another child when the gun discharged while they were playing with the weapon.
The gun, however, found by two family members Monday night, was improperly stored in a closet within easy reach, according to Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Two men, described as family members, have been charged and were released from custody tonight. One was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, failure to properly store a firearm and simple possession of marijuana. The other was charged with conspiracy. Names have not been released yet.
When the men found the gun they decided to store it in their apartment at 106 Beech Court in the Weldon housing projects, Temple said.
Shortly before 6 this evening, officers responded to a call a child was shot.
What investigators have learned thus far is one of three children, ranging in age from 6 to 10, found the weapon, a .308 bolt action rifle, and were playing with it. One of the children had the gun when it went off, striking the child in the chest.
Shortly after 7 p.m. two men were escorted from the house for questioning and were charged. “Both suspects were what we would describe as being severely upset with the situation,” Temple said.
One of the men was crying as Temple and Deputy Joe Puhak led him to a patrol car.
Earlier during the investigation Lieutenant Bobby Martin took the rifle from the apartment for evidence.
People sitting outside the apartment next to 106 said they didn’t hear anything or know what happened.
Crying could be heard from inside the apartment and at one point there was anguished sobbing coming from inside.
Temple said investigators are reviewing statutes and will consult with the District Attorney’s Office on the matter.
