CARY, N.C. – The Barton College softball team produced new season highs for hits and runs in a game during its second contest at the Shaw University Softball Challenge on Friday, pounding out 16 hits in a 15-5 five-inning rout of Clarion University.

Eight different players collected at least one hit for the Lady Bulldogs and seven of them delivered multiple hits, led by junior Brittany Jacobs’ 3-for-3 performance.

The effort was a stark contrast to the day’s first game, when Barton managed just two hits in an 8-0 six-inning loss to Queens University.

In splitting the two contests, Barton moved to 10-8 on the year.

Game 2: Barton 15, Clarion 5 (5 inn.)

The game started poorly for the Lady Bulldogs, as Kimberly Burdett ripped a bases-clearing double to left to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Barton got one run back in the bottom of the frame when Megan Kelly delivered a leadoff single and later scored on an RBI single by Jacobs.

The Lady Bulldogs broke the game open with a nine-run second inning. Barton sent 14 batters to the plate and collected seven hits off Clarion starter Rachel Hoffman (0-3).

BC added three more runs in the third inning on three hits, including an RBI double by Kelly, and tacked on two more runs in the fourth to bring the eight-run rule into play.

After giving up the three runs in the first inning, Sierra Hearp (Roanoke Rapids) allowed the Eagles (0-7) just one more hit the rest of the way. Both of Clarion’s remaining runs were unearned, scored in the third after two BC errors. Hearp walked four and struck out five in improving to 5-1 on the season.

Game 1: Queens 8, Barton 0 (6 inn.)

Kelly broke up a no-hit bid by Queens pitcher Courtney Pearson (8-5) on a triple with one out in the sixth. Hannah Jones followed with an infield single to short, but it was not deep enough to score Kelly, and Pearson used a groundout and strikeout to keep BC scoreless. The freshman walked two and struck out eight in the shutout.

The Royals (11-8) took advantage of three Barton errors to score five unearned runs in the third inning. Alyssa Strickler added a solo home run in the fifth inning, her fourth blast of the season, and Queens tacked on two more runs in the sixth to end the game by the eight-run rule.

Barton starter Hannah Jones (4-1) suffered her first loss of the year after giving up eight hits.

The Lady Bulldogs will face Elizabeth City State University on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the University of Charleston (W.V.) at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Thomas Brooks Park.
