This past week we received data from the NC State North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation reporting our 2022-2023 Index Crimes numbers.
The data from the NCSBI showed a reduction in index crimes from 2022 to 2023 of 14.14, or 2.67 percent from 2022 to 2023.
These numbers are reported to the FBI by the state of North Carolina.
Index crimes, according to the FBI are: Murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.

Index means that this is the number of crimes reported per population.
Roanoke Rapids has a population of 14,856 per the 2022 US Census.
According to the statistical premise associated with these numbers, for every 10,000 residents, 514.94 were reported as being victimized by an index crime.
Here is another way to interpret the data.
Example: In 2023 we had three murders.
This means that the chance of being murdered is 2.02 residents out of a 10,000 population.
Index crimes are not total crimes.
They are the crimes mentioned above.
There are also total crime numbers.
These are not captured by the FBI in its National Incident Based Reporting System.
As reported in August, we saw an 11.33 percent decrease in overall crime from 2022-2023.
This NCSBI report further supports that crime is down in our city.
This is only possible with your help. We depend on you to say something when you see something.
Our goal every day is to bring crime down.
Although we will never be completely crime-free, we are reducing it.
We are safer than we were 18 months ago.
We, all of us, are doing our part to make Roanoke Rapids a safer place to live.
Thank you for your hard work and for doing your part to keep your home safe.
