The Roanoke Rapids Police Department this evening unveiled its memorial honoring fallen officers in Centennial Park.

The memorial was the idea of Anne Moore, who wanted to honor one of the last wishes of her father, who was a Roanoke Rapids police officer.
The memorial honors Clifton L. Massey, Lieutenant William Edward Vaughan and Sergeant Calvin Edward Daniel.

Massey’s daughter, Mary Massey Burnette, who was 14 when her father died, attended, carrying the patrolman’s hat he wore when he was slain in 1946.
It also honors two of the department’s police dogs.
