It was unclear whether the four — Matthew Scott Gay, 25; Drew Anne Barlowe, 19; Cody Daryl Ballero, 21; and Leon Donald Strickland III, 20 — were familiar with the victim.

Detective B.C. Griffin could not immediately be reached for comment and Chief Deputy Scott Hall could not answer the question with certainty. It was also not immediately clear how much money the victim lost when five stolen checks were cashed at a local bank.

In a statement on the matter Hall said Griffin charged Gay with four counts of forgery and uttering; possession of a counterfeit instrument; five counts of obtaining property by false pretense and five counts of conspiracy. Gay was arrested Wednesday and received a $16,050 bond.

Barlowe, who also arrested Wednesday, was charged with eight counts of forgery and uttering; two counts of possession of a counterfeit instrument; three counts of obtaining property by false pretense and three counts of conspiracy. She received a $20,000 bond.

Ballero was charged with four counts of forgery and uttering; possession of a counterfeit instrument; obtaining property by false pretense, and conspiracy. He was also arrested Wednesday and received a $10,000 bond.

Strickland, who was arrested Thursday, was charged with eight counts of forgery and uttering; two counts of possession of a counterfeit instrument; two counts of obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy.

He received a $10,000 bond.

All Roanoke Rapids residents, the four have July 20 court dates.
