A routine check by a Wilson police dog handler alerted authorities to a package containing nearly 12 pounds of marijuana which was destined for a Roanoke Rapids business, a search warrant shows.

The execution of the search warrant Thursday by the City County Drug Task Force resulted in the arrest of the business's owner, Gary Williams, 41, on marijuana trafficking charges.

Task force Agent D.J. Hundley applied for the search warrant on Wednesday after receiving information from a Wilson police detective about a FedEx package receiving a positive alert from the department's handler and his dog to the presence of narcotics.

The routine check was done at what was described in the warrant as the FedEx processing hub in Wilson.

Wilson police applied for a search warrant, which was granted, to open the package, Hundley's warrant said. “The package was opened and it contained approximately 4,118 grams of leafy vegetable matter. The package was sealed back up and is in the process of being turned over (to task force agents) by the Wilson Police Department.”

Hundley's search warrant noted the address of the destination “appears to be a clothing store in operation” in Roanoke Rapids. “Affiant, after a thorough investigation, is anticipating (an) unknown person (or persons) to be at or near the business to intercept delivery of (the) FedEx package.”

Hundley also noted in the search warrant the Halifax County Sheriff's Office “is anticipating a controlled delivery of (the) FedEx package. Upon its delivery, it is anticipated that (an) unknown person (or persons) will attempt to take possession of the package at the business.”

The task force executed its search warrant, noting in the document evidence to be seized included the FedEx package containing 11.95 pounds of marijuana in an 18 x 12 x 12 brown box and any other controlled substances found at the intended delivery address of 917 Roanoke Avenue, named in the papers as Urban Inc. Clothing. The search warrant does not list the address from where the package was sent.

After the controlled delivery, Hundley wrote in the search warrant, the box containing the 11.95 pounds of marijuana, mail in the name of Urban Inc. Clothing to the attention of Williams, and a Mason jar with marijuana residue was seized.

The magistrate's order contained in the court documents found probable cause to believe Williams “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did possess in excess of 10 pounds but less than 50 pounds of marijuana.”

Williams was released from custody after a bondsman posted his bail, according to court records.
