Dildy, left, and Hawkins
Detective B.C. Griffin of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said Teresa Waynette Dildy, 32, and Sedrick Lamar Hawkins, 26, made the report on March 12.
In a statement, Chief Deputy Scott Hall said Deputy D.J. Epperson discovered the vehicle while responding to the Three Bridges Road area of Roanoke Rapids where the report generated and observed it was in a wreck.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
The wreck, in which Hawkins was charged by the state Highway Patrol, occurred the same day the vehicle was reported stolen, Griffin said. “Hawkins and Dildy conspired together to gain insurance benefits they were not entitled to,” the detective said.
The state Highway Patrol, according to court records, charged Hawkins with failure to report an accident and possession of an open container in the passenger area.
Hawkins was arrested May 5 and received a $12,000 bond while Dildy was arrested on May 6 and received a $1,000 bond.
They have May 25 court dates.
