More than a sign: Theater billboard back on

The digital billboard that once advertised shows at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre is operating again.

And those responsible for getting it working see it not only as a way to promote the shows, but lead potential developers to look at the available parcels surrounding the venue.

The sign was turned on Tuesday, Roanoke Rapids Public Works Director Larry Chalker said at the theater this week. “The repairs went in phases. We had to get the mechanical and electrical going.”

Helping the city in the endeavor were Bob Agoglia and Curry Roberts of the Computer Guy & Company of Roanoke Rapids as the sign not only required the proper software to become operational again, but precise programming of the graphics displayed on the sign, which can be seen coming and going on Interstate 95.

Cold, hot and wet days over time led to the demise of the sign, Chalker said, and required the electronic, mechanical and programming overhaul.

Upcoming events

With it up and running, advertising three planned concerts and a wedding expo — there are also several weddings and private events scheduled — Chalker said, “The place doesn't look closed. It draws attention to the facility and to the development around it. We're hoping it can entice developers.”

The parcels around the theater are laid out with all the infrastructure in place including fiber optics, water and sewer. “It's more than just a sign for the theater. We would be excited to see tourism use the sign.”

Agoglia said the sign shows there is activity at the venue. “When it was out, there were no signs of life out there.”

Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon said, “I think it shows relevancy and that we are open and inviting the public to be a part of the theater.”
