Longtime former educator and school board member Mary Francis Allsbrook Fisher was recognized Tuesday night by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory.

Fisher received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state’s highest civilian award. State Representative Michael Wray and Halifax County Commission Chair Vernon Bryant presented the award on behalf of McCrory.

Fisher served 32 years as a teacher, and 18 as trustee.

Calendar

The board also approved a change in the calendar to make up some of the lost time from the recent ice and snow storms. The teacher work day scheduled for Monday February 22, will now be a regular school day. Additionally April 19, previously scheduled as an early release day, will become a full day for students.

Medlin

The board heard from several residents who live near Medlin Elementary School.

The district has been working over the past few months to transform that property into a space for maintenance services, a training area for staff, and the hub for Information Technology.

The addition of a fence and bus shelter in the back and side yards of the building has some residents concerned.

Residents Robert Caudle, Henry Robertson, and Mae Cox asked the board to reconsider the property’s usage calling the exterior an eyesore.

Board Chairman Jay Carlisle reassured residents the board would further discuss its plans following Thursday night’s meeting with the Roanoke Rapids Board of Adjustment.

Recognition

The Board of Trustees also recognized teachers Henry Bridgers, Mary Jenkins, Pamela Moseley, and Kathryn Strickland for their national board re-certification.

RRGSD continues to maintain one of the highest rates of nationally board certified teachers in the state.

Roanoke Rapids High School Band Members, Wesley Christenbury, James Jones, Samantha King, and Sammi Webb were also honored.

The four auditioned for and were selected for the North Carolina Bandmaster's Association Eastern District All District Band. Christenbury, Jones, and Katelynn Porch were also selected for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Carolina Honor Band.
