A man involved in a standoff with Roanoke Rapids police Tuesday morning has been charged, Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement.

Investigator Chris Babb arrested and charged Khaalid Sharif Frederick, 35, with possession of a firearm by a felon; possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The common law robbery charge stems from an October 13 investigation by Lieutenant C.L. Vaught where Frederick reportedly snatched money from the victim.

Frederick has a lengthy criminal record and last August was released from prison after serving seven months for assault on a law enforcement officer.

For the charges stemming from the standoff, Frederick received a $15,000 bond and January 13 court date.

Frederick was booked Tuesday afternoon hours after the standoff began when police were called to the 500 block of Jefferson Street about him not taking his prescribed medication and beating on a door.

The call, which came in shortly before 1:15 a.m., led to a nearly four-hour standoff with police.

Involuntary commitment papers were issued. When officers entered the room the man had a gun. During the ordeal, in which officers from surrounding areas were eventually dispatched, the man did not threaten use of the weapon, Hasty said Tuesday.

Upon seeing the weapon, officers retreated, taking the person who reported the matter with them. They surrounded the residence and evacuated nearby residences.

While he did not challenge the entering officers with gunfire, police did discover two rounds were fired into the walls of his bedroom, Hasty confirmed this morning. It is not clear when those rounds were fired.
