The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:
This morning around 2 Lieutenant D.A. Newsome was on Highway 48 when he noticed a driver traveling in front of him weaving within their travel lane.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Olivia Fay Gonyea, crossed the white line and almost struck a curb and she began traveling above the posted speed limit — 38 in a 20.
Gonyea, 35, of Clinton, Massachusetts, crossed the centerline into the opposing travel lane.
Lieutenant Newsome stopped the vehicle and conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.
He determined the woman was impaired on a substance other than alcohol and placed her under arrest. She initially refused to be cuffed but once she complied was taken to ECU North where she consented to a blood draw.
She was charged with DWI, driving left of center, speeding and resisting a public officer.
She remains in the Halifax County Detention Center and has a May 24 court district court date.
Wednesday DWI
On Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., police received a call about a careless and reckless driver traveling south on Roanoke Avenue.
A witness told police the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Rebekah Tompkins, was all over the road.

The caller remained behind the vehicle until officers arrived and stopped the 42-year-old Gaston woman.
PACE Officer J. Conrad, Officer B. Holcomb, along with Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Deputy G. Martin and Sergeant B. Murphy had witnessed the driver continue to cross over the yellow line into oncoming lanes.
Conrad performed Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and determined that Tompkins was impaired on a substance other than alcohol.
Tompkins was placed under arrest and consented to a blood draw.
She was charged with DWI, reckless driving with wanton disregard and failure to maintain lane control.
She was released to a responsible person and has a June 7 district court date.
